If you've ever felt embarrassed by your parents, then spare a thought for this lot.

The tragic youngsters are seen with cigarettes dangling from their mouths, guzzling bottles of beer, taped to furniture and left dangling from coat hooks, proving that sometimes mum and dad really don't know best.

In another shot a young boy is handed a potentially lethal axe while a smiling girl is given a wash, oblivious to the fact she's been shoved into the toilet bowl.

One truly despicable dad is seen parading his little boy in a Nazi T-shirt while others parents clearly have no concern for their children's safety leaving them in the most precarious positions.

Meet the most famous freak In Arkhangelsk. Andrey Khristoforov, most known as Drevarkh Prosvetlyonny (Enlightened) realized at the age of 40 that he’s … a tree… His auctions in protection of forests are louder than any others.

He goes nude to any state institutions, climbs New Year’s trees, drives along the city by a Drevarkh car with a flasher on his head and leaves a sticker with an image of a tree on doors of all organizatons he sees. He also likes to change his names.

Recently he was arrested on Red Square, being in his usual outfit – tatters. And at that time he didn’t call himself Vladimir Putin yet. It was widely reported that Dmitry Medvedev was taken to a mental hospital…

Drevarch (Drevesny (Tree) Archangel) is usually nude at home to be closer to nature. Though he has many weird outfits.

Three fingers he shows mean three values of a human life: “build a house”, “grow a child”, “plant a tree”.

Drevarch has been to mental hospitals many times but has never been diagnosed. All doctors write: “he can make important decisions and participate in social life”.

Drevarkh has come to a bank. It turns out that being a freak is even useful! No staying in lines! He even managed to turn some babushka out of the bank office. Drevarkh told visitors about the universe love and trees. Guards did not want to communicate somehow with him. He left stickers in the bank too.

He even left his stickers on bank notes and the cellphone of this poor guy.

He claims he lives on donations from different countries, city and regional budgets. But it’s kind of doubtful…

Recently Drevarkh has become a leader of the Party of Love. That’s their meeting on the railway bridge. The shortest one. “I am glad to declare the party of love congress open! I am glad to declare the party of love congress close!”

Soon the party of love will arrange a rehearsal of V.V. Putin inauguration. You know who will be the main person.

7 Most Incredible Siamese Twins in History

We sometimes say that two people are so close that they appear ‘joined at the hip’ – metaphorically speaking, of course. But imagine this were a reality. (Indeed, think about how the phrase might have arisen.) What if you came from an egg that started to separate into identical twins but got stuck (or, as the alternative theory has it, were one of two embryos that became fused together) attaching you to your double for a lifetime? As we shall see in these seven cases from the late 19th and early 20th century, nature’s whim can join twins in the strangest of places – from the breastbone to the buttocks – making life difficult, to say the least. Given the state of medical knowledge at the time, surgical separation would have been out of the question in many cases, even if no organs were shared. Here are some of history’s most famous conjoined twins.

A hundred years or so ago, few conjoined twins would have been likely to survive more than a few weeks; indeed, even today, only one in four cases survive. Yet, back in the days when people were less scrupulous about what constitutes public entertainment, those born with this condition could become celebrities over night – whichever part of the world they came from. Likely facing limited options in terms of earning a living, many conjoined twins became sideshow attractions, turning their lives into one long public display. Beyond photographs and medical records, some history about these individuals has also survived – and it makes for fascinating reading.

7. Liou Seng-Sen and Liou Tang-Sen

Conjoined twins Liou Seng-Sen and Liou Tang-Sen were born in Nanjing, China, in 1886, or thereabouts. Their juncture was classified as xiphopagus, meaning they were joined between the navel and breastbone, as we can see in this image. Though quite solid looking, the connection between the pair was actually quite flexible, allowing them to stand side-by-side as well as facing each other. The twins’ mother died when they were only two years old, leaving their father as their guardian. However, from age six onward, they were readied for a life in show business, traveling from fair to fair in China, and later to Korea, Japan, India, Australia and Europe.

In 1902, the Liou twins traveled to the United States with their father to join the Barnum Circus – but not before being portrayed as ‘Korean’ to circumvent a ban on Chinese immigration and general anti-Chinese feeling. Unlike many other conjoined twins, Liou Seng-Sen and Liou Tang-Sen retired from show business while still young, returning to Nanjing at the age of 19, where they both got married and had children. However, with their fortunes dwindling, the brothers were forced to make a brief comeback, aged 63. Then, in 1957, one of the twins fell ill with bronchitis. In a revolutionary operation performed in Beijing, the twins were separated, with the ailing brother dying while the other survived. Having lived to the age of 71, they were the longest surviving conjoined twins on record.

6. Rosa and Josefa Blazek

Rosa and Josefa Blazek were born on January 20, 1878 in what today is the Czech Republic. Despite being fused from the ninth vertebrae down, they were delivered normally to parents – who must have been shocked, to say the least. But Mr. and Mrs. Blazek were also superstitious, and following a local medicine woman’s instruction, apparently did not allow the infants to eat or drink water for eight days. When the twins survived – quite miraculously, given this barbaric treatment – the parents and those around them appear to have understood it as God’s will that put their progeny on Earth.

This ‘diving purpose’ perceived by the Blazek parents was, of course, for the twins to be shared with the world – and thus generate money in the process. So it was that from age one onwards, the twins were put on display in country fairs. At the age of four, they started to learn the violin, and as their fame grew, they took on a manager to organize and make the most out of their performances. In 1893, they even went to the United States to perform at the Columbian Exposition in New York.

Before their trip to America, on April 16, 1910, Rosa, the more extroverted of the twins, caused quite a stir when she gave birth to a baby boy at the age of 32. In light of the twins’ physical condition, their fame, and the fact that Rosa wasn’t married, it seems they tried to pass Rosa’s ‘sickness’ off as appendicitis. Nobody was fooled, however, and the doctors, too stunned to give any proper medical account of the birth, provided more fodder for a sensationalizing media through their silence. The papers went haywire, making up various stories about Rosa’s sexual encounters and loose morals as well as the delivery itself. The newborn boy was called Franz, after his alleged father, who died fighting in the Austrian army in 1917 – although not before he had married Rosa.

The twins moved to Chicago after traveling to the States again in 1921, seeking to join vaudeville. However, their American experience was cut short when Rosa fell ill with the flu. Worse still, by the time Rosa recovered, Josefa had fallen sick, too, and she slipped into a coma on March 25, 1922. While discussions were being held over whether or not to separate the twins, they died, on March 30. Nevertheless, an X-ray taken postmortem showed that the operation would not have been possible because the sisters’ spines were too inextricably fused.

5. Simplicio and Lucio Godina

The difficulty of the decision surrounding whether or not to operate on conjoined twins is shown in the case of the Samar brothers – so named after the island of their birth – Simplicio and Lucio Godina. Born in 1908, these boys from the Philippines later made the trip to the United States, where they became sideshow attractions in such hubs of ‘entertainment’ as Coney Island. In 1928, after various legal difficulties – including narrowly avoiding jail when a man was injured in an alleged drunk driving incident – they got married to identical (but not conjoined) twin sisters, Natividad and Victorina Matos, in Manila.

As for their condition, according to Louis R. Sullivan, from the American Museum of Natural History, who examined them briefly on July 31, 1918, the bodies of the Godina brothers were “entirely distinct except for a juncture of the right buttock of one of the twins with the left buttock of the other”. In medical terms, theirs was a pygopagus juncture – where the bodies are joined at the pelvis – very rarely seen in male conjoined twins, as most die at or before birth.

Although the Godina twins’ bodily connection was quite flexible – allowing one to stand while the other lay down – it was critical in that they shared one large intestine and anus. When Lucio died of either rheumatic fever or pneumonia in 1936, surgery was performed to separate the twins. It was a risky operation as the connection between the twins consisted of muscle 24 inches in circumference at the bottom of the spine. After the separation, Simplicio had to undergo another operation in which the outlet of his colon was reconstructed. After 28 years of being joined to another person, Simplicio experienced the feeling of being physically unattached to anybody – but sadly only for a few days. He died less than two weeks later of spinal meningitis.

4. Giacomo and Giovanni Tocci

As we can see in these images, the Tocci brothers were dicephalic conjoined twins; that is, they had one body with two heads, and were often dubbed ‘the two-headed boy’. Like Millie and Christine McKoy (see entry 3), they were often referred to as one person rather than two distinct personalities – as they were! The twins were connected from the sixth rib down, such that each had a pair of arms but shared two legs with the other. They also had separate hearts, lungs and stomachs but common genitalia. Like the parents of many other conjoined twins, mamma and papa Tocci realized the potential commercial advantages of their boys, preparing them for a life in show business and putting them on show when they were as young as one month.

Although it is known that the Tocci twins were born in Locana, Italy, on October 4, the year of their birth is hazier – but is reckoned to have been sometime between 1875 and 1878. Unlike the other twins described here, the Toccis never learned to walk, but instead moved around using all six limbs or else traveled in a wheelchair. It has been suggested that this lack of mobility arose because the brothers were too busy with their hectic performance schedule. Other conjoined twins who shared two legs have been able to walk; and, interestingly, the twins did have vastly different temperaments, with Giovanni bright, loquacious and highly artistic, and Giacomo just the opposite.

Much of rest of the Tocci twins’ life is shrouded in mystery. What we do know is that after shuttling from city to city in their early childhood, they journeyed to the United States in the 1880s. There, Mark Twain saw them in one of their shows, inspiring the great man of letters to pen his story “Those Extraordinary Twins”. They returned to Italy in the 1890s and not only retired from show business but also vanished altogether from public view – behind the high walls of their home. Whether they ever got married, as some sources claim, and even when they died, is unclear, though 1912 is likely the year at least one of these significant events took place!

3. Millie and Christine McKoy

Millie and Christine McKoy were born, joined at the base of the spine, on July 11, 1851, the eighth and ninth child of Monimia and Jacob McKay, slaves owned by a blacksmith in the small town of Welches Creek, North Carolina. At only ten months old, they were sold along with their mother to a showman, who in turn sold them on to two more men in the same trade, looking to make a quick buck. It seems to have been around this time that their last name was changed to McKoy.

While still very young, the McKoy twins were kidnapped at an exhibition in New Orleans by yet another showman, who exhibited them another year, including at Barnum’s American Museum. Sold yet again in 1855, this time to a professor, they ended up in Canada, and then Europe, where former owner Joseph Smith reunited them with their mother and brought them back to the United States.

2. Daisy and Violet Hilton

Daisy and Violet Hilton were born on February 5, 1908, in Brighton, England. Their young, single mother must have been quite overwhelmed at giving birth not only to twins but a pygopagus set – meaning those siblings joined at the pelvis. Evidently not realizing the financial potential of what were allegedly the first conjoined twins born in Britain to survive beyond a couple of weeks, the twins’ mother ‘gave’ them up for adoption to her landlady and midwife, Mary Hilton, when they were less than a month old.

As we can see in this image, the printing machines of the time were rolling out postcards of the Hilton twins, who must have been a marketing man’s dream. Dressed in identical outfits, one sister plays the violin while the other accompanies her on the piano. They were already performing by the age of 3, and the postcard text here reads, “If we have interested you, kindly tell your friends to visit us.”

Recognizing their commercial promise, Mary Hilton started exhibiting the twins soon after she had acquired them, and they would be taken on tour to Germany, Australia and the United States. Interestingly, at one stage they were shown together with Rosa and Josefa Blazek (see entry 6) – quite possibly the first time ever that two pairs of conjoined twins were exhibited together. The Hilton sisters soon gained a fair bit of fame and generated no small fortune through their work. When Mary Hilton died, she ‘left’ Daisy and Violet to her daughter, Edith, and the latter’s husband, Myer Myers.

The Myers relocated to the United States with the Hilton sisters, using the twins’ money to build a luxury home in San Antonio, Texas. With their singing and dancing routine, the twins were an instant hit in vaudeville and toured the States throughout the 1920s, and numbered Bob Hope and Harry Houdini among those in their social circle.

Eventually, the Hilton twins found a sympathetic lawyer in one Martin J. Arnold, and so broke free from the allegedly abusive treatment they suffered at the hands of the Myers. In 1931, Arnold helped the sisters to sue the Myers, freeing them from their contract and legal bind with their custodians and netting them as much $100,000 in damages. Apparently predestined for a life in film, the twins starred in the 1932 movie Freaks, which speculated on the love lives of conjoined twins. Then, in 1950’s Chained for Life they played vaudeville singers Dorothy and Vivian Hamilton, based loosely on themselves. Too risqué for its time, the later exploitation movie flopped, forcing the twins – now at the end of their savings – to search for other means of making a living.

After being abandoned by an unscrupulous agent while attempting a comeback, Daisy and Violet ended up working at a grocery store in Charlotte, North Carolina. However, on January 6, 1969, they were found dead in their trailer, having succumbed to a bout of Hong Kong flu.

1. Chang and Eng Bunker

Chang and Eng Bunker top our list because they are probably the most famous among all the conjoined twins. Indeed, theirs is the reason the expression ‘Siamese twins’ was coined. They were born on May 11, 1811, in Samutsongkram, a province of what is now Thailand but was then known as Siam. So renowned did the brothers and their condition become that the term ‘Siamese’ was soon applied to conjoined twins in general.

As xiphopagus twins (like Liou Seng-Sen and Liou Tang-Sen, see entry 7), Chang and Eng were joined only by a small section of cartilage around the lower breastbone (sternum), sharing a liver but no other organs. While they are often shown standing side-by-side, the twins managed to achieve this only after practice and by stretching the connecting tissue gradually. Not much is related about the twins’ early life – whether they were ever exhibited by their parents or simply lived a fairly normal life in their rural riverside community – but what is known is that by the time they were 18, their lives had changed drastically.

According to one source, Chang and Eng were ‘discovered’ while out swimming one day in 1824 by an associate of the American showman Abel Coffin, who recognized their commercial potential. According to another source, it was British merchant Robert Hunter, who made the find in 1829 and paid the twins’ family to exhibit them to the world at large. Whatever the case may be, they embarked on a world tour, traveling with the famous P.T. Barnum's circus.

The Bunker twins died on January 17, 1874, after Chang fell ill with pneumonia and died in his sleep. Even though the surgery of the day may have been sufficient to finally separate the twins, Eng is said by some sources to have refused the operation and in any case died a few hours later. The Bunkers’ shared liver can be seen in Philadelphia’s Mütter Museum to this day.

Notwithstanding the obvious physical difficulties they endured, the stories of conjoined twins are often shocking because they show how easy it was for them to succumb to unscrupulous individuals seeking to exploit their condition (not only monetarily but also sexually). Being referred to as one person – despite having quite distinct personalities – may well have been among the lesser evils some of them suffered while being exhibited in circuses and sideshows around the world. What’s more, some of the twins appear to have embraced show business (Daisy and Violet Hilton), were able to lead relatively normal lives (Chang and Eng Bunker), or simply took being stared at every single day of their lives in their stride.

The UW engineers used microscopic scale manufacturing techniques to create a flexible, biologically safe contact lens with imprinted electronic circuits and lights. Carrying out basic DIY repairs at home is something most people find to be a fairly simple procedure.

But when it comes to your car, it is always best to leave the repairs to the experts.

That advice, however, was certainly not heeded by the owners of these vehicles.

Front fix: As an example of a botched bodywork job, there isn't a greater example than this budget repair work

Open-air: The owner of this car appears to have turned his boot into a mini tractor trailer

Colour uncoordinated: A yellow pipe has replaced this Jaguar's front bumper

Seen better days: This vehicle has an apartment air conditioning unit stuck out its back window and a power generator bolted on the back

To say these cars have seen better days would be something of a huge understatement.

But if there was an award for the most ingenious, if unsafe, fix then several of these car owners would be in with a shout.

Take, for instance, the car which has an apartment air conditioning unit stuck out of one of its back windows.

Or the vehicle with a huge log as its rear bumper.

Clearly with safety a throwaway concern, this Jeep has a wooden foldaway chair for a passenger seat

The Top 10 Strangest Sexual Phobias

Nearly a quarter of Americans suffer from some type of phobia, whether it’s being scared of heights, spiders, or peanut butter. Those suffering from them know they're irrational, but it doesn’t make the fear any less real or debilitating. That said, it seems some people have developed phobias of just about everything and when comes to the bedroom, these phobias can be downright strange.

10. Medomalacuphobia – Fear of Losing an Erection

This is the fear of losing a boner. Now, I think most men have this worry-- that they’re going to get some and the minute its time to sink the salami a bad case of whiskey-dickitis takes over. According to medical science the fear of losing an erection can result in “breathlessness, excessive sweating, nausea, dry mouth, feeling sick, shaking, heart palpitations, inability to speak or think clearly, a fear of dying, becoming mad or losing control, a sensation of detachment from reality, or a full blown anxiety attack.” What they don’t mention is that the fear of losing an erection may actually cause you to lose your erection.

9. Gymnophobia – Fear of Being Nude

Those with gymnophobia suffer severe anxiety from being nude and seeing others nude, even if it’s in a socially acceptable situation. This can make getting to third base a little tricky. The fear stems from feeling physically inferior when naked and from a fear that being naked leaves them exposed and unprotected. One of the most famous gymnophobics in pop culture would have to be Tobias Fünke from the television show Arrested Development. He artfully described himself as being a "never-nude."

8. Eurotophobia – Fear of a Female’s Sex Parts

Eurotophobia is the persistent, abnormal, and irrational fear of a female’s sexual organs. Some individuals suffer the phobia all the time, or it can be triggered from direct stimuli of the vagina (or when Paris Hilton crotch shots hit the web). This phobia is apparently quite common and linked to a past sexual experience gone sour. The phobia can cause feelings of dread, a rapid heartbeat, anxiety, and tunnel vision.

7. Philemaphobia – Fear of Kissing

This is one phobia you can’t kiss and make better. Philemaphobic are afraid of being kissed. It is a very specific phobia and a subset of malaxophobia. The fear can be triggered for two reasons. It can be caused by a traumatic experience or from a fear of bad breath and/or the transmission of germs.

6. Erotophobia – Fear of Talking About Sex

This is the fear of talking about sex. It is not the fear of having sex. People with this phobia just don’t want to talk about it, discuss it, or even read about sex. People suffering from erotophobia will react in a negative manner to sexually explicit material, which can have devastating consequences. Such individuals are less likely to adopt any form of birth control, so they're more likely to have unplanned pregnancies and contract STDs. While people suffering from erotophobia are not explicitly afraid of sex, they do have sex infrequently and are not very adventurous in the bedroom. This is probably because they’re too afraid to read the Kama Sutra.

5. Malaxophobia – Fear of Love Play

This is the fear of love play. Now you might ask, “What the heck is love play?” It’s a valid question. It’s kind of like asking, “What is love?” The interwebs is a little vague on the term (where is Wikipedia when you actually need it?). The term basically refers to a fear of being intimate. Those who suffer from malaxophobia are afraid of being caressed, stroked, or fondled. It’s kind of like a fear of foreplay, which it seems like a phobia a lot of men may have or may start using as an excuse.

4. Sexual Claustrophobia – Fear of Sex Indoors

As the name suggests, this is the fear of having sex in enclosed spaces. It's one phobia that can get you into a lot of trouble, as it usually leads to copulating in open spaces. While this sounds awesome, it’s not all roses and doggy-style on park benches. For Danielle Vincely the condition quickly ends relationships. The 24-year-old British woman recently made her sexual claustrophobia public and revealed that her phobia “ruins her love life.” She says, “Guys love it at first. They think it’s kinky making love under the stars in the woods, on beaches, park benches, and car bonnets… But after a while they get annoyed, especially if it’s raining, and dump me. Men like a quick romp inside on the bed but I just can’t bring myself to do it.” Maybe she should make her bedroom look like the English countryside with some clever wallpapering.

3. Oneirogmophobia – Fear of Wet Dreams

This is the abnormal fear of having a wet dream. Wet dreams are a strange part of adolescence and man’s first nocturnal emission can be an unsettling an embarrassing experience. According to Alfred Kinsey, in the United States 83 percent of men will experience a wet dream sometime in their life (or have at least admitted to having one). In Indonesia the rate is much higher with 97 percent of men experiencing a nocturnal emission by age 24. It should be noted that women can indeed have wet dreams, though it is less noticeable and way less messy. People who suffer from oneirogmophobia can be so afraid of experiencing a wet dream that they refuse to go to sleep.

2. Medorthophobia – Fear of an Erect Penis

If you’ve ever heard yourself say, “Get that erect penis away from me,” screamed and run out of the room in terror, then you may be suffering from medorthophobia. This is the fear of an erect penis. It is not a fear of penises in general, but the fear of a stiffy or when a man’s main member is at full salute. Now, I think it’s safe to assume that this is a phobia suffered only by women. A man with a fear of an erection, well, may not actually be a man. As a dude suffering from this condition would be hell. It’d make morning wood worse than any nightmare.

1. Parthenophobia – Fear of Virgins

Parthenophobia is the fear of virgins or young girls, which could make getting through high school rather difficult. People suffering from this phobia may suffer a panic attack or severe anxiety just from the thought of being in close proximity to a virgin. People suffering from this phobia are not just scared of virgins in a sexual sense, there are scared of coming in contact with them in regular life, even though they are fully aware that this is irrational. This is type of phobia that would suck if you’ve been promised 42 virgins or have your heart set on being a high school teacher.

30-Year Old Brazilian Woman Looks Like a 9-Month Baby

We bring to you the curious case of a real-life Benjamin Button, with a twist. A Brazilian woman, who has neither aged, nor is getting any younger. Born on May 7, 1981, Maria Audete do Nascimento still has the body of a baby.

Maria belongs to a poor family, living in a mud house in Ceara, Brazil. Her family consists of her father and his second wife, who has been caring for her ever since her own mother died, 13 years ago. The family cannot afford to provide any form of treatment for Maria, whose condition could have been reversed if treated at birth. For now, she continues to live like a baby, unable to tend to her own needs, and unable, even to speak. The home in which Maria lives, however poor, does not seem short of love. Her step-mother, Dora, has taken care of the woman-child since the day she was married. Dora believes that it is the passion of her life, and that the child was sent to her as a gift of God, to take care of.

Experts from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ceara believe that what Maria suffers from is a severe deficiency of the thyroid hormone. As a result of hypothyroidism, her body was never able to develop physically or mentally. They also went on to say that if the case had been identified early on, Maria may have grown up as a normal child. The University has agreed to provide free treatment to Maria, to enable her to be a little more independent – to walk, eat and say a few words. But for now she is, in some ways, what every parent wishes for – a child that never grows up.

Whether it’s animals, beer or food the truck is loaded with at some point it’s all going to go wrong and the result could be live poultry flapping about a motorway or a road covered in beer just like you’ll see in the gallery below.

2,184 cases of Beer

Highway 401 in Mississaugua was closed on May 11, 2005 after an accident that spilled 2,184 cases of Grolsch beer. A woman driving a car swerved out of her lane and into the path of a Molson beer truck, causing the truck to roll over and the car to flip. One officer described the scene as "a sea of beer". The woman's life was most likely saved by her seatbelt and airbag. The beer was a goner.

An accident involving two freight trucks has ensured that the N36 between Mariënberg and Hardenberg had to be closed for several hours to all traffic. For over a hundred meters, the wayside (or the road) was littered with broken glass, beer crates and bottles, police said.
The reason was two cars collided around one o'clock. One of the trucks was transporting beer and swerved. Despite this, the driver was unharmed. The other driver took off and continued to drive his truck away. He later was stopped in Almelo.

6 tons of fresh Chicken for grilling

This truck spill is all about chickens, yep, tons of chickens spilled from an overturned truck… too bad it was raining and not hot out, could have been time for a road side barbecue, I hear the black asphalt gets hot enough to cook eggs on. ewww ( Link )

Doughnuts

In October 2011, in Illinois, a truck carrying frozen baked goods and bratwurst was involved in an accident, causing its cargo to spill all over I-74. The results were delicious. The accident left 20 tons of food, including chocolate cake, doughnuts and cinnamon rolls, strewn all over the highway. Authorities were forced to close the road for seven-and-a-half hours while crews cleaned up the gooey mess.

Two people were reportedly taken to the hospital, but their injuries were not life-threatening. However, doctors did diagnose them with a case of “full stomach syndrome.” (Via)

A Ton of Cocaine

We are not talking about the coke we enjoy to quench our thirst. This is the Class A drug. A ton of the stuff ended up on a road in Bogota, Colombia in 2007, after a drug gang's truck overturned. The cocaine was hidden in the walls and roof. (Link)

Tons of Mackerel

A truck full of fish overturned and dumped its load into Northern Ireland farmer, Gordon Flinn's, field in January 2012. The tons of mackerel were piled two feet deep in places. The driver of the truck was taken to the hospital, but was not seriously injured and was able to return to the scene. The truck was removed and the road opened later that night, but the Flinns may have to put up with a fishy smell for some time. (Link | Via)

40,000 lbs of Ice Cream

In December 2011, 18,000 kilograms (40,000 pounds) of ice cream spilled from a semitrailer in the state of Indiana, closing two lanes of an interstate highway. The truck was trying to enter the interstate from a ramp when it tipped, spilling cartons of vanilla, caramel praline crunch, and other flavors of Edy's ice cream, onto the interstate.
The spill was expected to take as long as six hours to clean up completely. Oddee's editor would have been glad to help. (Link)

14 Million Bees

Cleanup crews in Idaho had to clean up honey, and an estimated 14 million bees, that got loose after a delivery truck overturned on a highway. Several workers were stung during the first few hours of the cleanup. And some observers told about seeing a strange black cloud and roaring noise above the spill area, before realizing it was a massive swarm of bees.
A truck was hauling the bees from California to North Dakota when the driver veered off onto the shoulder, tipping more than 400 hive boxes and honey. Crews worked for two days before removing all the honey from the roadway, although deputies say a significant amount of bees were still buzzing.
That's what I call a sticky situation.

Not a good day for the chickens

n October 12, 2007, 3,000 chickens were being transported on the A-80, one of Scotland's busiest roads. The lorry jack-knifed near Castlecary, spilling chickens everywhere. The driver was treated for back injuries. 400 chickens d*ed in the accident, or later from their injuries. Traffic backed-up for five miles and the A-80 was closed for hours.

Thousands of chickens escaped from their crates and flocked on the road and nearby. Feathers were everywhere. Police spent five hours trying to catch the birds. Officers also took down the license numbers of drivers that were using their cell phones to take photos of them as they chased the chickens. They reported that 20 drivers will be charged with using a cell phone while driving.

Chicken Handlers from Noble Foods and Veterinarians arrived to help. One Vet estimated that she had to put down about 80 chickens with broken wings and legs. (Link)

Shoes

On January 2, 2009, shortly before 8:00 a.m., thousands of shoes mysteriously appeared on a Miami highway. Who spilled the shoes? Nobody knows. But they disrupted traffic on the Palmetto Expressway for hours. There was no sign of a crash and no one has claimed them.
They were a strange mix of shoes... work boots, slippers, sneakers, sandals, even roller blades. A private contractor was hired to pick up the shoes and dump them in an empty field (weird). Soles4Souls, a nonprofit organization, was expected to pick them up and distribute them, probably in Haiti. If anyone does come forward they will be charged for the cleanup.
The shoes had, what seemed to be, yard sale price tags on them. (Link)

$80,000 of Bull Semen

It's not often a huge load of steaming bull semen spills across a highway- but that's exactly what happened when four vats fell from a bus and shut down an American interstate in Nashville, Tennessee. The wayward canisters containing the cattle sperm were first reported to police at five a.m., after motorists driving on the downtown Nashville interstate caught a whiff of a foul odor wafting across their vehicles.
A Greyhound bus ticket found near the vats alerted emergency crews as to who was responsible for their transportation, and it's understood the bus carrying the canisters was totally unaware of its lost cargo. Experts in cattle breeding and artificial insemination estimated that the four canisters were worth up to $80,000 US (£48,000). (Link)

Two million Euros in Coins

Cash-grabbing motorists brought a road to a standstill after an Italian lorry carrying Euros overturned and spilled two million of them - in coins. The truck overturned in Foggia, southern Italy, in July 2010, shedding its contents all over the highway and leading motorists to hit the brakes and dig in.
Local police said that it was impossible to establish how much money had been stolen, as many of the €1 and €2 coins remained in piles on the highway. But motorists acting quickly before police arrived made off with at least € 10,000. The truck's driver and one passenger had suffered minor injuries. The truck was carrying the money from the Italian mint to local banks. (Link)

5 Cruise Ship Disasters That Changed Travel

Some good may yet come of Italy's Costa Concordia wreck. At least since Titanic, cruise accidents have sparked new safety standards.

Costa Concordia

The cruise ship Costa Concordia lies partially sunk just a few hundred yards from the rocky coast of the Italian island of Giglio on Monday. Though the fallout from the disaster remains unclear, past luxury liner accidents—the Titanic shipwreck being the most infamous—have sparked new measures for keeping passengers safe and dry.

The Costa Cruises-run ship's hull was ripped after the liner ran aground Friday. Capt. Francesco Schettino had steered the 126,000-ton vessel dangerously close to shore, purportedly to salute people on the island.

Eleven people are confirmed dead from the accident, and 23 people are still missing. Accused of manslaughter, causing a shipwreck, and abandoning ship, Schettino is now under house arrest.

R.M.S. Titanic

More than 1,500 people died in the disaster, largely because the White Star cruise line outfitted the ship with only enough lifeboats for about half the people aboard.

"That was extremely ill advisable," said Maxtone-Graham, author of the new book Titanic Tragedy: A New Look at the Lost Liner, due in March.

To make matters worse, no lifeboat drill involving passengers was performed before the Titanic set out, and many of the oars in the available lifeboats were so new that they were still tied with twine.

"When people got in the boat that night, some of them had a hard time getting the oars rigged," said Maxtone-Graham.

As a result of the Titanic disaster, modern cruise liners now must carry enough lifeboats for all of the passengers on board.

Star Princess

Charred, the cruise ship Star Princess heads into port in Montego Bay, Jamaica, in March 2006.

The Star Princess fire, begun on a private balcony, was likely the victim of a cigarette burn gone very wrong. "The rubber matting that covered the balconies was fabricated from crude oil, and it was flammable," Maxtone-Graham said.

"What was amazing was that the fire spread the length of the deck, jumped from balcony to balcony, and then up two more decks."

The fire was eventually put out, and the Star Princess was repaired. The ship now has sprinklers on all of its balconies—and the UN's International Maritime Organization has since adopted a new code requiring more fire-resistant cabin balconies.

S.S. Morro Castle

A barge sprays tons of water to douse the S.S. Morro Castle cruise ship after it caught fire in the early morning hours of September 8, 1934.

A coastal cruiser, the Morro Castle was sailing from New York City to Havana, Cuba, when it caught fire. The ship eventually made it to Asbury Park, New Jersey, where the vessel was beached.

In a scene eerily like the Costa Concordia accident, the Morro Castle "was a wreck in plain sight from shore," Maxtone-Graham said.

The cause of the fire is unclear, but most experts agree that lax crew discipline was partly to blame.

"Some said she caught fire because of unhappy or vengeful crewmen," Maxtone-Graham said. "There was a story—and I can't say this was true—that there was a fire in a wastebasket and a crewman put it in a closet, shut the door, and went about his business."

As a result of the Morro Castle disaster, cruise companies later placed a higher emphasis on crew discipline, he added.

In addition, the International Maritime Organization adopted standards encouraging noncombustible materials in ship construction.

M/S Explorer

The M/S Explorer became the first purpose-built cruise ship ever to sail the frigid waters of the Antarctic waters in 1969. The vessel was also the first to sink there—as pictured after hitting an iceberg in November 2007. (See "Special Report: The Sinking of the Explorer.")

All of the Explorer's 154 passengers and crew survived, but the accident caused several international shipping and cruise organizations to take a closer look at their rules and guidelines governing Antarctic voyages. (See video on the Antarctic Ocean.)

For example, the United Nations' International Maritime Organization (IMO) accelerated discussions that are intended to lead to the development of a comprehensive "Polar Code" that would govern everything from the type of equipment ships can carry, the types of hulls they can have, the experience levels of the people on their bridges, and more.

"There are IMO guidelines for passenger ships in ice-covered waters currently in place, but they're just that—guidelines," said Steve Wellmeier, the executive director of the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators.

"Since the Explorer sinking, there's been a greater urgency to beef up the Polar Code and to make parts of it mandatory."

R.M.S. Empress of Ireland

The R.M.S. Empress of Ireland sinks in the St. Lawrence River near Quebec City, Canada, in 1914.

While sailing out of the port of Montreal on the foggy morning of May 29, 1914, the ocean liner was struck amidships by a Norwegian ship, the S.S. Storstad. The Empress sank very quickly and claimed 1,012 lives.

"The boat turned over on its port side and went to the bottom like a stone," Maxtone-Graham said.

According to Maxtone-Graham, the Empress's primary weakness, and the reason it sank so fast, was bad compartmentalization. That is, the design of the ship's rooms and compartments were not built with barriers to prevent widespread flooding in the case of a hull breach.

The Extreme Crocodile Cage (Australia)

Without the cage you wouldn't stand a chance swimming with a massive saltwater crocodile. But for brave punters who still want to get cozy with a feisty croc, a new Australian tourist attraction is offering the chance for a close encounter in the safety of a clear acrylic box dubbed the 'cage of death.'

Just 4cm of acrylic, a pair of goggles and a swimsuit, separate thrill seekers from the jaws of Choppa, a saltwater crocodile. The cage has no bars, unlike cages used in shark dives, which prevent the reptiles from gripping on, but deep tooth scratches are visible on the sides, deterring some hesitant participants. Top End tourists climb into the clear box before being lowered into Choppa's lair. They then spend 15 minutes inside the 9ft high cage and watch Choppa, who lost both front feet while fighting other crocodiles, try to take a bite out of them.

The attraction at Crocosaurus Cove, in the heart of the city of Darwin in the Northern Territory, has been given high marks by adrenaline junkies. (Link | Via)

Cliff Base Jumping (Norway)

Norway has absolutely beautiful landscapes, including crazy cliffs that call to people to climb them and then BASE jump off the top. Here's a look at some of those incredible cliffs, as well as some insanely dangerous switchback roads to get to them in Norway. Thrill seekers, photographers, hikers and climbers take in these majestic views of nature. And then, there's BASE jumpers who have a much more extreme need for adrenaline. Charles Lindbergh once said of his adrenaline rush, “It is the greatest shot of adrenaline to be doing what you have wanted to do so badly. You almost feel like you could fly without the plane.” Here in Norway, as if they've turned into Superman, some adrenaline junkies do fly without a plane. (Link)

Iguazu Boat Ride (Argentina & Brazil)

Taller than Niagara Falls and twice as wide, the Iguazu cataracts are one of the most impressive sites that you will ever see in your travels around the world. 275 waterfalls cascade through the Argentine and Brazilian parks and once you see the Devil's Throat you won't regret the trip.

For 15 USD you can take an Iguazu boat ride that will allow you to thumb your nose at the visitors in both countries, as you motor right into the fury of the monstruous falls. Not only will you get absolutely soaked and feel, up close, the power of the falls, but you also get bragging rights, because no matter how you phrase it, the fact that you took a small boat and motored into the dump zone to receive a sheet of water from some of the biggest falls in the world, is undeniably sweet.

Note: In 2011, two US tourists were killed and five people were injured when one of the boats overturned. Seven tourists from the US, Germany and Colombia were sightseeing at Iguazu Falls in northern Argentina with a crew of three when their boat hit rocks and flipped over.

CN Tower Edge Walking (Toronto, Canada)

The CN Tower holds a Guinness World Record for its EdgeWalk attraction — the highest external walk on a building. The attraction allows people to walk hands free along a 1.5-metre-wide ledge that surrounds the top of the tower's main pod.

Walkers who venture out in groups of six are secured with a harness during their 150-metre stroll. The walk opened to the public on Aug. 1 2011 and officials say it has attracted thrill seekers from age 13 to 90. (Via)

Volcano Bungee (Chile)

If throwing yourself off a platform with nothing but a bouncy cord tied to your feet is a bit too lame for you, then you're a candidate for the wildest bungee jump we've ever heard of: the Volcano Bungee near Pucón, Chile. Basically you get flown up to an active volcano--yes, we mean a bubbly, smokin' volcano--and then you have to bungee jump off the helicopter into the caldera towards the molten lava. Are these people insane?

Anyone thinking that throwing themselves into a volcano sounds fun also needs to be fairly well off. You can do this bungee jump as part of a six-day package for $9,995, including accommodations and other (slightly less crazy) activities. (Link)

El Caminito Del Rey Trekking (Spain)

Adrenaline junkies have been flocking to southern Spain to experience the 110-year-old El Caminito Del Rey. And you don't need to be an experienced climber either; the only requirements are that walkers should be at least twelve years old and have a good head for heights. The trail, also known as the King's Pathway, was originally built in 1905 for workers to travel between two hydroelectric power plants but was closed-off in 2000 after two walkers fell to their deaths. Kayaking with Whales (Alaska)

While combining canoeing with bird watching or fishing is certainly a reason some people paddle, it is becoming increasingly popular to kayak and paddleboard in search of bigger more elusive life. The rise of the internet, which has publicized these encounters between kayakers and paddleboarders with sharks and whales, is adding to the allure of this endeavor.

While Alaskan sea kayakers have long owned the rights to cool photos of themselves in kayaks with breathtaking panoramas in the background and whale tales in the foreground, this phenomenon is increasing with greater frequency in other parts of the U.S. and the world. What is cooler after all than kayaking with a whale? It is almost becoming predictable as to when kayakers will be able to share in this experience, as whale experts are increasingly able to predict the feeding patterns of these truly beautiful marine mammals. While it is quite uncommon for whales to do any damage to humans, it is not out of the question. Their sheer size and weight make an encounter with these gentle giants a dangerous proposition. Zorbing (New Zeland)

This is an extreme sport which allows adrenaline junkies to roll down a hill in a giant inflatable ball. Adventure company Have You Got The Ball Ltd from Bryn Coch Farm, Whitford, near Holywell, offers an experience called sphereing, also known as zorbing.
Zorbing is generally performed on a gentle slope, but can also be done on a level surface, permitting more rider control. In the absence of hills some operators have constructed inflatable, wooden or metal ramps.

Why do so many people find clowns scary? Only a few years the Bestival Festival on the Isle of Wight in the UK had to rethink its plans. Each year there is a theme and they thought they would follow up their successful cowboy theme with one based around clowns. They had so many phone calls from adult ticket holders complaining that they would no longer be able to come because of their fear of clowns that the organizers had to rethink the theme.

So why is it that so many people are afraid of clowns? I am certainly no exception. One of my earliest memories is a visit to the circus where – sat on the ringside row, I watched the clowns make their entrance. They circled around the ring, laughing and jolly and one made a beeline for me, eager it seemed to shake my hands. The resulting hysteria almost, so my mother maintained for years, brought the house down. It seems that I was pretty much the most entertaining feature of the show.

Maternal lack of sympathy aside – as well as a lasting embarrassment throughout my childhood and teen years - why did I as a toddler find clowning about so terrifying? Was it that my burgeoning ability to process the facial features of others was put in to a form of panic-struck overdrive by the sight of so many exaggerated and colorful beings? Was it that the skin tone and facial appearance of the clowns threw me off kilter and – at some primal level at least – made me do the only thing I could which was, of course, to scream my head off?

Bring in the clowns? Blame the buggers! Even before psychology was an ‘ology’ people instinctively knew what made others tick. The clowning tradition did not evolve purely with entertainment in mind and so it might not be any surprise that a lot of adults as well as children find the distorted features of clowns more than a little disturbing. Many people even form an early fear of that arch-clown, Santa Claus. The thrill of fear can leave lasting memories and performers have been quick to use this through the centuries. However, when does a simple aversion become a phobia?

Why fear these harmless entertainers? I wasn’t a particularly sensitive child (unless it suited me, so I am told). Was it because I saw myself in their anarchic actions? Did they represent, however subconsciously, unreason and an out of control nature which I somehow recognized? Was I afraid of their casual violence towards each other and fearful that it would extend to me? Were they a mirror to my soul? Or was I just a wee wuss?

However you look at it, by the nineteen eighties the condition was so widespread that a word had to be coined for it – and what an odd word it is. Like all phobias it has its origins in Greek and the ‘coul’ part comes from the Greek for limb. It is a rather odd choice of words but the Greeks themselves had no equivalent to a clown so the real origin of the word comes from kolobathristes which is a stilt walker. Strange, but true.

When something is taken out of its usual context it can sometimes create a reaction that others may feel is disproportionate? I was lucky in many ways that McDonalds did not open one of its ‘restaurants’ in my home town until I was in my mid-teens. With all the rationality associated with teenage boys I found the presence of a certain Ronald McDonald completely unnerving. My mother had always told me not to talk to strange men and this man was, indeed, most peculiar.

Seeing the clown outside of a circus could have been what predicated by pubescent panic. Lon Chaney, famous for his portrayal of The Phantom of The Opera among others said ‘There is nothing funny about a clown in the moonlight’ and I for one am inclined to agree with that sentiment. Yes, that’s right; every single respondent said that they were unhappy with the presence of clown images in the institution.
